4 Speed Top Cover Overview
Features
We understand the love affair with your vintage motorcycle, there’s nothing like putting authentic, vintage styled components on your nostalgic bike. That’s why BAKER has taken the time to reinvent the 4 Speed Top Covers. The BAKER billet aluminum (6061-T6) top covers come with a linear detent system for that smooth reliable shift quality you have come to expect.
The shift drum starts life as a solid chunk of steel; we machine in all the features, then we remove the unnecessary material. Two Teflon coated bushings are pressed into the drum for smooth rotation during shifts. Our top covers come in FL or N1 shift patterns on the Jockey Top and FL, FX or N1 for the Ratchet Top Cover.

4-Speed Top Cover Installation
Preperation:
1. Following your Factory Service Manual, remove the transmission top cover assembly. The transmission might have to be removed on some models in order to remove the top cover.
NOTICE THAT THE SCREW NEAREST TO THE DOWEL PIN ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE TRANSMISSION IS VENTED. THIS SCREW MUST BE INSTALLED IN THE SAME POSITION DURING ASSEMBLY. IF NOT TRANSMISSION OIL MAY BE FORCED OUT INTO THE CLUTCH. THE VENTED SCREW RELIEVES GEAR BOX PRESSURE DURING HEAT EXPANSION. |
2. After the top cover has been removed, clean the gasket surface of the transmission. Be careful not to get gasket material inside of the transmission housing. Clean the threads on all bolts. | FIGURE 3 | SETTING TOOL OFF OF DRUM |
Installation:
1. Check the shift fork dog tooth alignment using the shift fork alignment gauge; HD® PN 96384-39 or equivalent. Shim forks if necessary to get proper dog tooth gaps following your Factory Service Manual. Refer to figures 3 & 4. | FIGURE 4 | CHECKING FORK ALIGNMENT |
YOU MUST CHECK SHIFT FORK DOG TOOTH GAP BY USING THE SHIFT FORK GAUGE; FAILURE TO CHECK/SHIM SHIFT FORKS TO GET PROPER TOOTH GAP COULD RESULT IN SEVERE INJURY OR EVEN DEATH. |
2. After the alignment is out of the way, install the top cover gasket and top cover. Be careful to insure that during installation of the cover the fork pins align properly into the shift drum tracks.
3. Install the stock top cover bolts using blue Loctite®; make sure to install the vent bolts in the proper location. Tighten and torque all bolts to 100-130 inlbs.
4. Shift through all gears to make sure all is working properly. You will have to spin the mainshaft in order to shift through all gears.
